Racer Immigration has learned about a new five-year economic immigration pilot plan aimed at the Western Canadian provinces, rural and northern Ontario communities, and the northern territories. The pilot project, Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program, builds on the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program introduced in 2017 and fills the same need by facilitating permanent residence for foreign workers of various skill levels. Locations include Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

Eligible communities can be a city with a population of less than 50,000 or one that’s 75km from the core of a metropolitan area of 100,000 or more. Cities of up to 200,000 people can also qualify if they are considered remote.

Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said about the program: “By creating an immigration pilot aimed at rural and northern communities, we’re looking to ensure that the benefits of immigration are shared across the country,”

Interested communities need to work with a local economic development organization to show that they meet the pilot’s eligibility criteria and demonstrate how immigration will promote local economic development priorities. Communities that wish to apply need to submit an application by March 1, 2019, and those selected to participate in the pilot will be announced in the spring.

Nova Scotia Welcomes Record Number of Immigrants

Nova Scotia’s three Express Entry-linked streams—Nova Scotia Demand, Nova Scotia Experience and Labour Market Priorities—allow the province to invite eligible candidates to apply for permanent residence.
